Anyone who es through Buarque de Macedo Street, in the center of Maceio, sees the movement of workers on the track. Some people are even thinking that the exchange of the rails is for the Light Rail Vehicle (LRV), start in Alagoas, carrying a series of products to the port of Jaragua. The stretch that connects Maceio to the port of Suape, in Pernambuco, exists already, but it was destroyed during the floods that happened in 2001.
The Transnordestina Railroad will have 550 kilometers long and will link the ports of Pecem (CE), Suape (PE), São Luis (MA) and Jaragua (AL). In Alagoas, the stretch that is being rebuit is 375 km long, starting in the city of Canhotinho and going to Porto Real do Colégio. The recovery phase includes the section between Estação Ferroviaria and the Port of Maceio. The investment is US$ 61 million, but until now it has been released only US$ 5.28 million by the Fundo de Investimentos do Nordeste (Finor). The work is part of the Growing Acceleration Program (GAP).
It is expected that the stretch that connects the Pernambuco’s network to the state of Alagoas, beginning at Cabo de Santo Agostinho and ending at Porto Real do Colégio, will begin its operations in April 2010 (as was said earlier in the report). On the connection of the Pernambuco’s hinterland with Suape, the first section to get ready has, as deadline, the end of 2010. It is expected that the final conclusion of the work is to be made in April 2012.
Besides integrating the Northeast to the rest of the country, rail freight will allow a cheaper transportation (it is estimated that the costs decrease by 40%) and a cost reduction in the final price of the product.
The work of Transnordestina will facilitate the marketing of various products, including sugar, alcohol, plaster, cement, seasoning and fertilizer.
