Governor Sérgio Cabral requested and the House of Representatives of the State of Rio de Janeiro already approved the authorization for the state acquiring a loan of US$ 600 million with International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD).This cash, according to the Governor’s message, shall be applied in the second phase of the state transport program (Programa Estadual de Transportes 2 – PET 2), especially for the improvement of the railway system in the Metropolitan Region.


According to the Governor, the PET 2 seeks to prepare the state and also the capital city for hosting the World Cup in 2014 and then, two years later, the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2016. The State Government has taken on the commitment to buy 120 new electric trains for the commuter train lines of the Metropolitan Region. The State has already purchased 20 cutting-edge trains with air conditioning, which have been operational since December 2007.  By 2012, another 30 similar units shall be in operation. With this new loan, a further 60 trains shall be purchased.


The State shall pay off the financing over an average period of 18 years, with interest charged at between 0.28% and 1.15%. Mr. Cabral has asked Alerj to treat the voting of this project as an urgent matter. This proposal shall be appraised by the plenary group by the end of the year.
