The government of Minas Gerais launched on Saturday the first notices to bid for the works of modernization and expansion of the metro in Belo Horizonte. The competition aims to hire companies that will perform drilling and surveying services, budgeted for US$ 4.63 million.
The bidding process was opened by Trem Metropolitano de Belo Horizonte (Metrominas), connected to the State Secretary of Transportation and Public Works (Setop). The resources for the completion of the services will come from the state government and the City Hall of Belo Horizonte, until the funds are released from the federal government, under the Brazilian Growth Acceleration Program (PAC – Programa de Aceleração do Crescimento).
According to the State Secretary of Transportation and Public Works, Carlos Melles, Metrominas is anticipating the work of surveying of the areas where work will be done, specially the construction of the first underground stretch of the metro in the capital, linking Lagoinha district (Northwest area) to Savassi district (South-Central region), which will have five stations and 4.5 km.
The delivery of the documentation and the price proposal is scheduled for May 9, at the istrative City. The opening of the envelopes, which marks the beginning of the bidding process, will occur the next day.
In addition to track 2, drilling and surveying services will be carried out in the stretch between Calafate, in the West area and in Barreiro. This stretch will have 10.5 kilometers long and will have six stations. In track 1, the services will comprise the modernization of the stretch between the Eldorado station, in Contagem (city of the Metropolitan Region of Belo Horizonte) and Vilarinho station (Venda Nova). Moreover, the expansion of 1.7 km and the installation of a station in the Novo Eldorado district also will undergo the studies.
Betim – Although not yet in the project announced by President Dilma Rousseff last year, the expansion of the stretch between Contagem and Betim will also have the drilling and surveying services funded by the state government and municipalities.
According to Melles, it is expected the announcement by the federal government of how the funds will be released to the proposed works. The required investments for the expansion and modernization of the Metro are US$ 1.66 billion. But, according to him, the estimates are that by the end of this year the notices to bid for the preparation of executive projects will be published.
Out of the total to be invested in the project, the government will contribute with US$ 545.3 million from the Mobility PAC (the Brazilian Growth Acceleration Program) and will give authorization for a financing of approximately US$ 409 million. The remaining funds, $ 709 million, will be provided by the state government, the municipalities of Belo Horizonte and Contagem and the company that will be contracted, through competition in the public-private partnership (PPP) mode.
The expansion of Belo Horizonte metro has been expected by the population for decades. Currently, a single line is in operation, between Eldorado (Contagem) and Venda Nova (Northern area of the capital). The stretch has 19 stations and 28 kilometers long. With the contributions announced Friday, the transportation capacity of the railroad modal will increase from 160,000 to 860,000 people per day.
