Spanish, French and Bolivian consulting companies are developing studies for the Central Railway Corridor Project which intends to connect Brazil, Bolivia and Peru, announced last Monday in La Paz the Inter American Development Bank (BID in Portuguese).
The expert in transport for BID in Bolivia, Ramón Muñoz-Raskin, affirmed to the Efe Agency that a credit at the order of US$ 6.8 million has been given to the study of interconnection of the west and east Bolivian railway network and to the beginning of a Railway Technical Unity of the Bolivian government.
“The studies, under development, shall identify the alternatives for the corridor outline in different scales of project. Each alternative shall be assessed according to its respective advantages and economic, social, environmental and strategic inconveniences”, said Muñoz-Raskin.
The studies include a strategic advisor so Bolivia can execute international agreements which guarantee the feasibility of the Central Bioceanic Railway Corridor and to organize and coordinate meetings with Brazil and Peru.
According to Muñoz-Raskin, at the area there is no history of railway bioceanic corridor projects led by a nation and ed by BID.
But there is already a similar study led by the private sector for the construction of the Aconcagua Bioceanic Corridor between Chile and Argentina.
Bolivia shall receive technical, economic, environmental and strategic information necessary to take decisions based on the investment on this corridor and the interconnection of the Bolivian railways network, explained the BID expert.
The program is also in accordance with the BID general and strategic goals for promotion of the competitive international integration regionally and globally, He added.
The Andean and Oriental Bolivian railways, under private companies, are separated by the lack of infrastructure, a problem which this project intends to solve in order to consolidate the national railway integration.
A few days ago, the Bolivian government anticipated that one of the studies, the one which refers to the international railway outline and the Andean and Oriental Bolivian railways interconnection, shall be delivered this month.
The President of Bolivia, Evo Morales, had already said that he has suggested to the Chinese president, Xi Jinping, to co-financing the construction of a railway from the border between Bolivia and Brazil to the Peruvian port Ilo.
If becoming a reality, the international railway will facilitate the sending of Brazilian cargo to the Pacific, through the territory of Bolivia and the ports of Peru.
