Directive Plan brings indications of subway and BRTs expansion

After three years of study to prepare – 2012 to 2015 – and $5 million funding from the Banco Mundial, the Directive Urban Transport Plan (PDTU) was presented on Wednesday by the state secretary of transportation, Carlos Roberto Osório, in the Urban Development Forum of the Legislative Assembly (Alerj). The Plan provides indications of subway and BRT expansion. In addition to guide state public policies for the area of transportation and mobility of the 21 municipalities of the large metropolitan area of Rio de Janeiro, PDTU includes detailed surveys and field research to identify all trips in the Metropolitan Area. Of the approximately 22.5 million trips made daily, 48.7% are made by public transport, 31.8% by non-motorized means (walking and cycling) and 19.5% by private transport.

There are three scenarios to guide the planning of public officials. The first, with the provision of transport planned for 2016, which includes the delivery of new projects such as the Subway Line 4, the TransOlímpico and TransBrasil BRTs, and increasing of the capacity of the rail system with the arrival of new train sets.

The second scenario has the year of 2021 as reference, in which PDTU proposes the implementation of new projects in transportation area such as the subway Line 2 extension at Estácio-Carioca-Praça XV stretch, the implementation of subway Line 3 between Niterói and São Gonçalo, the implementation of the BRT lane at RJ 104 linking Niterói to São Gonçalo and Itaboraí, plus a set of BRS bus lanes in the Metropolitan Area. It is also planned in this scenario the investment in the enhancement of integration between modals in Caxias, Nova Iguaçu, Pavuna, Coelho Neto, Deodoro and Alcântara (São Gonçalo).

The third scenario, with a vision of 30 years, includes the expansion of the subway network in stretches like Uruguai-Méier, Gávea-Uruguai, Jardim Oceânico -Terminal Alvorada, and Alvorada-Ilha do Governador. In the rail system, it is planned to implement the expansion Santa Cruz-Itaguaí and the creation of integration between Japeri, Belford Roxo and Saracuruna extensions, in Baixada Fluminense. It is also scheduled the implementation of intercity BRT lanes in Baixada Fluminense and Metropolitan East.

— PDTU will be the com that will guide State and Metropolitan cities in the development of its integrated transport networks. It will be the common ground of municipal mobility plans and will guide the state public policies. This project is a living document that will be discussed with society and adapted to new realities over time – said Secretary Osorio.
