Lula kicks off the West-East Railway in Bahia

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva said today that his government has taught the country that it is possible to work with two goals simultaneously. Lula attended the g ceremony of the work orders of the four lots of the first section of the Railway East-West Integration (Fiol), at the Convention Center in Ilhéus, south coast of Bahia.

Brazil did not know how to grow without inflation, did not know how to export and strengthen the internal market, it seemed that one thing was the enemy of the other, he said. Brazil sometimes decided for building railway, other times decided for building roadway.   It has never been thought that it was more interesting for us to have the railway, highway and waterway, an inter-modal transportation system, like what we’re doing.

The first section of the railway is 537 km long and will connect Ilhéus to Caetité (Bahia State), directly benefiting the industry of extraction of iron ore installed in the municipality. The planned investment is R$ 2.4 billion and the project should employ 10,000 people and be completed in December 2012.

The second section, which will connect Caetité to Barreiras (Bahia State) and allow the flow of production of the agricultural frontier in the far west of Bahia, is scheduled for completion one year later. After this phase, the third section will connect Barreiras to Figueirópolis (Tocantins State), where there will be integration with the North-South Railway.

The flow of production will be done by the South Port, which will be built in Ilhéus. Still missing the port, which is being discussed, but I think, hopefully, around the month of March the mate Dilma (Rousseff) will be here to do the same gesture that I’m doing today, announcing the commencement of construction of the port, Lula said.

Farewell

The president repeated the tone of farewell to the government in his speech. He said to have the feeling of duty accomplished and not to believe that anyone is able to govern the country without knowing it. It is very difficult to govern sitting on a chair in Brasilia, in the air-conditioning, he stated. Either you know the reality, the face of this people or you would do what has ever been done, that is, govern for only 30 million people.

Moreover, Lula defended the welfare policies that he strengthened over the two . Growth is not enough, we must also have income distribution policy, he said. In economic crisis, who ed the country’s economy were the classes C and D, which consumed more than classes A and B. Give a poor man R$ 10 and he becomes a consumer. Give another citizen R$ 1 million that he becomes a speculator.

For Lula, Brazil has found the perfect equation between the macro-economy that does not escape the responsibility and the micro economy that makes things come to people’s homes. They say that Lula speaks only about the poor. But the rich do not need the State, who needs the state is the poorest portion.

The president also said to have made Brazil a country of the capitalist economy. It was not before because it was a country that had no consumers, had no credit or financing. What is a capitalist country that has no capital?, he questioned.  Today, the Bank of Brazil alone has more credit than the entire country had in 2003.
